Venue - Moonlight Club - West Hamstead –
Zeitgeist. Svor Naan noted “I think this relates to the
second performance here. [the first was 6 February 1980].
1) a broken spring or whatever on my Saxophone meant that
some of the songs had to be dropped
2) a spot light so intense as to make the sun pale in
comparison. It must surely have been purloined from a football
stadium. It was certainly unsuitable for the size of venue. It
was impossible to look forward from the stage so I had to turn
my back throughout. A very miserable gig.”

Richard London notes “The original song 'For King Willy'
around which the record is built was initially a Shend song
which was arranged during the initial Cravats period of
activity at one of the random alternative rehearsals which
occurred whilst Robin Dallaway and Dave Bennett were
absent. Original personnel: Shend: Vocals and Bass, Svor
Naan: Guitar and Muson Toy Synth, Chewy Parf The Nodor:
Drums and Chanting. (These same sessions also brought into
the world ‘The Piston Smashed’). I am not certain whether
this was 1982 or 1983 - certainly it was 1983 when Rob
Dallaway got involved and added a keyboard part with a
harpsichord sound to 'For King Willy'. Robin also brought
in his own piece which became 'The March Of The Babymen'
with Svor Naan on the Clarinet.
All of this was recorded on cassette but, it was put on
hold for a few years and was only recorded in a onventional
studio and received an official release via 'One Little
Indian' records in 1986.
By this time The Very Things had been taking up most of
Shend and Rob's energies and Svor Naan was in Pigbros and
Dave Bennett had joined Poison Girls. The official release
saw a change in the personnel to the extent that Svor Naan
was not asked to play his guitar part which was instead
played by Robin. Robin had also taken control of the
overall concept and added two pieces.”

Release Date: June 2007
Notes: The Messthetics series of compilations is finally spreading
from beyond London and the Home Counties, starting to give
account of D.I.Y. music in more northern territory. For this
outing we make it as far as the midlands, taking in bands like
Swell Maps as well as lesser known outfits such as The Prefects,
Digital Dinosaurs, Famous Explorers and The Cravats. A beautifully
assembled package this, jammed with consistently great material
totalling some 22 songs on regular CD audio, 4 MP3 tracks with a
24 page booklet bringing together insightful liner notes and
rare photographs of the artists involved.

Title: Death To Trad Rock
Format: CD
Label: Cherry Red
Catalog Number: CDMRED 420
Date Recorded:
Release Date: 26-Oct-2009
Notes: faster! louder! bass aggro, high treble xerox culture, pop
noise and anti trad rock feeling ... adventures in the 80's
post punk underground...
Acting as the perfect accompaniment, and partner in crime to
John Robb’s brilliant book on a scene so smart-arse, it
daren’t call itself scene, Death To Trad Rock. Here on one CD,
picked by the bands themselves are 25 of the defining tracks
of the era. An era when in the mid-Eighties, as Thatcher
turned the screw and the charts overflowed with what felt to
many like the most boring pop music ever made, the underground
exploded. The post-post-punk scene was a diverse collection of
bands brought together by independent releases and a never-
ending series of gigs performed in off centre venues the length
and breadth of the UK, aided by reportage in fanzines and radio
play from John Peel. Some of these acts went on to mainstream
success, some were rounded up and herded awkwardly into the
NME's C86 bracket whilst others faded away, only to become
seminal influences in later years. In Death To Trad Rock we meet
everybody involved and find out just how they all arrived at
such an unlikely tangent in such a boring decade. On Death To
Trad Rock - The Album we hear the beautiful noise they created.

Title: Built On Sand: A Birmingham Sampler 1978-86
Format: Download
Label: FACT Magazine
Catalog Number:
Date Recorded:
Release Date: October 2009
Notes: “We were rather flattered when Karl O’Connor AKA Regis, the
Birmingham-based techno icon who co-founded British Murder
Boys and more recently Sandwell District, asked FACT if we’d
like to give away a mix he’d initially planned to release on
CD via his Downwards label. The mix concerns itself with
Birmingham’s vibrant but infamously fragmented and undervalued
punk and post-punk scene of the late 70s and early 80s, and
features amazing music by familiar artists like the Au Pairs
and Swell Maps as well as more obscure nuggets from the likes
of Spizzenergi. Mixed and edited with all the punch and
precision we’ve come to expect from Regis, this is a blisteringly
enjoyable listen and an invaluable history lesson to boot.

By all accounts The Cravats should have had more success than
they did. Eagerly supported by John Peel (those who tuned in
could follow his association with The Shend), having releases
on Small Wonder and the Crass label, they managed to release a
handful of singles and a couple of albums. Their assocation with
Penny Rimbaud possibly spurred on their Dada antics (even early
on they had an oddball stage presence which suggested Bonzo Dog
madness with some KLF attitude) which included ‘Acoustic Rock
Cricket’ and performance art along the A34.”
